At the beginning of the new century, the French company Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) decided to create their own rum brand. The rum meant to be produced in small batches and only from the highest quality ingredients. The original intention of the company was to gain partners among Barbados distilleries. After the initial negotiations, they decided to proceed with their own distillery, which they built in Trinidad on the grounds of the Usine Sainte Madeleine sugar refinery.

The name “Ten Cane” refers to the number of sugar cane stalks bound into one bundle during the sugar cane harvest. Apparently, that is the amount needed to produce a single bottle of rum. Angostura company assisted with the construction and launch of the distillery. Angostura’s role was also to secure the sugar cane supplies, manage distillery operations, oversee the rum maturation process, and handle logistics. Additionally, Angostura provided their own aged molasses rum for the blends. Some sources even state that the ratio was 75 % rum from fresh sugar cane and 25 % from molasses.

The first rum was introduced in 2005, and for its production, fresh sugar cane juice was distilled in a copper distillation pot still of Alembic type. The idea was to create a light, artisan rhum agricole that would reflect its terroir, which is why the aging was short (only 6 months) in barrels previously used for cognac.

Unfortunately, in 2013 Angostura announced the end of cooperation with LVMH as the profit expectations were not reached. The owners moved the brand and all supplies of the aging rum to Barbados, where the production continued for some time in the Foursquare distillery. In 2015 the production was quietly closed down for good. However, a small amount of the aging rum barrels remained in the warehouses. And thanks to the independent bottlers who managed to find, buy and bottle these gems they found their way to the rum fans all around the world.

Probably, Ten Cane brand will not leave any significant footprint in the rum history, but with our single cask we would love to demonstrate that it is a real shame. Because if you give this rum longer time in oak barrels and proper care, you will be surprised to find out that the overlooked “Ugly duckling” aged into an elegant, charming and wonderful swan.

One cannot escape the thought of what would have happened to the reputation and demand for Ten Cane if the production had focused more on creating a rum with fully developed character. Are you curious about how rum, which accidentally aged for years instead of a few months, tastes? The answer is to be found in a glass of this Single Cask that tells the never-written story of Ten Cane. Story that, sadly enough, the world never had the opportunity to get to know properly and discover in its full glory.
